Lunch, tour and tasting for eight (8) people at Beringer Vineyards
For those who have met or played baseball against Rusty Staub, he is a
formidable presence. Yet, for all of his stature, he is easily one of the
warmest, most open and easygoing people who walks the earth. His passion for
food and wine is only equaled by his generosity and willingness to do
magnificent things for children in need.
Take today’s lot for example: just like Rusty, the Beringer Cabernet Reserves
from six highly touted years, are impressive for their history and prior
achievements and at the same time, their current performances seem to eclipse
their former notoriety. Called “a candidate for California’s best all-around
winery,” Beringer seems to move from strength to strength under the deft hand of
its winemaker, Ed Sbragia.
The lot has six six-liter Imperials which kind of remind you of Rusty at bat due
to their sheer size and the knowledge of the power that lies inside a person who
dares to stare into the mouth of the lion. The clean-up hitters in Beringer’s
line-up are its mountain-fruit Cabernets.
These “Sbragistes” are prodigious palate-staining wines, with dazzling
concentration, explosive richness and with sensational extract and balance on
their finish. Each bottle has been stored under pristine conditions and will
reward several more years of cellaring until its number is called.
Also on-deck is a gourmet lunch for eight and a private tour of Beringer
Vineyards. Founded in 1876, Beringer’s historic Rhine House, an ornate Victorian
structure, remains its centerpiece. Tour the old stone caves that date back more
that a century and also its modern barrel-aging chai, where you can watch how
these wines become major league superstars.
