I like big bottles, I can not lie. Whether hearts, homes, or diamonds, bigger is better. Sometimes size does matter, and fine wine is one such example. Time and time again, a wine from a large format bottle has been shown to age more gracefully and hold its quality longer than the same wine from standard bottles.

Theories for this phenomenon are numerous. Some argue that the smaller ratio of the cork to the volume of wine allows less exposure to oxygen, slowing the wine’s life cycle. Others point out that wineries, conscious that these showpieces are more likely to be opened at prestigious events, might have a tendency to see that their best barrels or blends end up in these Brobdingnagian behemoths.

Five sterling examples of these are assembled in this one-of-a-kind lot. From the smallest and most collectible of Silver Oak’s wines is a 1987 Bonny’s Vineyard. Only produced in its finest vintages, “Bonny’s” is from a small Cabernet vineyard named after Justin Meyer’s wife. Dark, rich and complex, this beautifully orchestrated wine is one of the top Napa Cabernets from this legendary vintage. Only 60 of these massive Imperials were produced from this vintage, and this rare bottle has the additional distinction of being autographed by the late Justin Meyer.

Equally remarkable is the beautifully etched and hand-painted five liter of Domaine Serene’s 2004 “Evenstad Reserve” Pinot Noir. Firm, aromatic and generous with its lush fruit, this is a wine to treasure, and has been graciously autographed by Domaine Serene’s proprietors Grace and Ken Evenstad. Autograph collectors will also be thrilled with legendary Doobie Brothers’ producer Bruce Cohn on an Imperial of his B.R. Cohn Cabernet Sauvignon. Packed with ripe, rich and luscious cherry flavors, this big beauty is open and ready for business.

Any collection of big bottles would be incomplete without two classic whites; Chardonnays from Far Niente and Ferrari-Carano. Each is presented in a custom wooden box, with the Ferrari autographed by Rhonda and Don Carano.
