In 1914, Karen Dinesen came to Africa from Denmark to marry Baron Bror von Blixen-Finecke and start a coffee plantation. Her story is told in the 1985 Oscar-winning motion picture, Out of Africa. As the film begins, we see Karen crossing the wide African plain by rail, steaming towards the Ngong Hills. We soon meet Denys Finch-Hatton, a professional game hunter with whom Karen ultimately falls in love. Their life together is set in both the comfort of her well-appointed plantation house as well as billowing tents pitched in the brush on safari. All the drama, romance and adventure of that period will envelop you in this singular African experience.

From the moment you land in Johannesburg and are met by your guide and driver, you’ll feel the sense of discovery that awaits you. Not only will you get to explore the city itself but privately tour Alexandra and Soweto. The excitement builds as you venture to Victoria Falls. Called Mosi-oa-Tunya by the local people, a name that means “the smoke that thunders,” Victoria Falls, formed by the Zambezi River cascading down the edge of a plateau, is the largest sheet of falling water in the world. A Sundowner cruise and private tour will make seeing this natural wonder even more extraordinary.

Little can match the magnitude of Victoria Falls like six days on safari. Three luxurious Orient-Express Safari camps that recall the sumptuous comfort of that legendary railroad will serve as your home. Each camp is strategically situated to ensure you will enjoy the very best viewing of wild game in three unique eco-systems. Savute Elephant Camp is the heart of the arid Chobe National Park. Khwai River Lodge overlooks the flood plains of the Moremi Wildlife Reserve. And Eagle Island Camp rests in the wetlands of the Okavango delta – here you’ll have the opportunity to see Africa from the air on a helicopter game viewing excursion. Luxury tented accommodations include hotel style amenities en suite, including air conditioning and the superb service of Orient-Express Safari’s staff.

The elegance and opulence of the Edwardian era will be more elaborately evident when you board Rovos Rail’s Pride of Africa on your journey from Pretoria to Cape Town. Rovos Rail has earned an international reputation for its world-class travel experiences. Beautifully rebuilt classic trains each carry only 72 passengers in the total comfort of its fine wood-paneled coaches. You’ll stay in Royal Suites, offering spacious quarters, privacy and a five-star standard of appointments.

Before ending your South African adventure, you’ll privately tour incredible sites including Cape Point, Table Mountain and Robben Island. From beginning to end, this experience promises to deliver the rugged outdoors in the most refined setting.

Cast yourself in the role of the romantic adventurer and come out of Africa with cinematic memories!
