Piero Incisa della Rocchetta
Bodega Chacra Rio Negro, Argentina
After a childhood spent on a centuries-old winemaking estate in Tuscany and managing the day-to-day operations of two family wine estates in Umbria, Piero Incisa della Rocchetta went to Argentina to fulfill of his lifelong dream of being a winemaker himself. A graduate of the prestigious Florimont School in Switzerland, he earned a Masters from New York University and started Bodega Chacra in 2004 when he purchased an existing vineyard, abandoned since 1932 in the Rio Negro Valley of Northern Patagonia. Piero discovered a regularity of climate in this area that creates consistent wine from vintage to vintage. The first vintage of Chacra "Treinta y Dos" was produced in 2004 with 1,330 bottles of “Hands down...the finest Pinot Noir from South America...” according to Wine Enthusiast. Piero discovered and purchased two additional old Pinot Noir vineyards, yielding “Cincuenta y Cinco” and “Barda,” a blend of declassified grapes recently introduced to high praise.
