The wines of Peter Michael have many things in common with Blancpain watches. Both are made with in small quantities, with passionate craftsmanship and painstaking attention to detail, in addition to being among the most distinctive of their kind. A preference for either will immediately identify you as someone of discriminating and rarified taste. And though they are difficult to acquire, the winning bidder on this lot will have access to both, while being looked after in three locations on both sides of the Atlantic.
The Blancpain timepiece will certainly become a family treasure. Blancpain is the world’s oldest watch company, which was founded in 1735 when Jehan-Jacques Blancpain registered as a watchmaker in the village records of Villeret (Bern, Switzerland). For centuries, the company has been a leader in both design and innovation while continuing the meticulous standards of Swiss craftsmanship.
Your stay in Switzerland will be filled with memories. A private car will take you to Blancpain’s workshops in Switzerland’s Vallée de Joux, which is the legendary cradle of watchmaking. There, you will tour the Blancpain Métiers d’art workshops, including a visit to the complicated watch atelier, where the rare coveted timepieces are handcrafted.
You will have the unique treat to sit down for a private consultation with a Blancpain artist to design your special red gold timepiece which will feature a custom hand-painted dial. Miniature enamel painting on a watch is a rare craft. Only a handful of artists in Switzerland practice this traditional art form. Your choices for the dial are essentially unlimited: a portrait, a landscape, a favorite pet, a prized car, a yacht. Your finished watch will be a one-of-a-kind limited edition of one.
Your stay in this alpine paradise will be in one of the finest hotels Switzerland has to offer: the Hôtel des Trois Couronnes in Vevey. It is located on the shore of Lake Geneva with views of the surrounding soaring mountains. Enjoy the beauty and serenity at this Five-star hotel with a relaxing fifty-minute massage at the Puressens Spa.
While in Switzerland you will be treated to a gourmet’s dream: a cooking lesson in Crissier’s Hôtel de Ville restaurant. Knowledgeable food lovers from around the world make the pilgrimage here to enjoy the cuisine of Franck Giovannini. The very name of the village above Lausanne where the restaurant is located has become synomous with the restaurant. This legendary temple of gastronomy was founded by chef Frédy Giradet, who was followed by chefs Philippe Rochat and Benoit Violier before the torch was passed to current chef Giovannini. Throughout its history and today, Crissier has held Three Michelin Stars and the maximum number of points from the Gault & Millau guide. Its ranking in the top 10 restaurants of the world remains secure.
Your second European destination is in the UK. When Sir Peter Michael transitioned overseeing the winery to his son Paul, he was well aware that the estate would be supervised by someone deeply experienced in both wine and hospitality. The winery has been part of Paul’s life since the age of 18 when he helped plant the Les Pavots vineyard with his father. He later graduated from hotel school in Switzerland and spent the early years of his career in the hotel and restaurant business before joining the family business in 1994. Along with his wife Emily, he oversees operations at the family’s Vineyard Hotel in West Berkshire, England.
When you take your trip to Berkshire, you’ll spend four nights at the family’s Vineyard Hotel, a “temple to Californian wine,” dedicated to the proposition that good food, wine and company must come together to form a life well-lived. From the peaceful surroundings of your luxuriously appointed bedroom to the world-class cuisine in The Restaurant, every detail will be perfect. But since life at the Vineyard revolves around wine, the high point of your visit will be a seven-course meal accompanied by a blind tasting of California and French wines, a modern re-creation of the now legendary 1976 Judgment of Paris.
In 1976, a wine tasting was held in Paris that changed the course of history. The Grands Crus of France were tasted blind against the emerging wines of California—and to the astonishment and consternation of the French judges, the new world wines came out on top. The event put California wine on the map and established it as the quality equivalent of the wines it emulated. In honor of this event, the hotel’s sommelier, Roman Bourger, voted 2019’s “UK Sommelier of the Year,” will personally select wines from California and France to taste side by side. While no one can guarantee your decision, the evening will be a fascinating exercise in contrasting wine styles and personal preferences.
Back in the U.S., you will have the opportunity to experience the Winery and Estate in Sonoma’s Knights Valley on the western slope of Mount St. Helena, where Sir Peter Michael established his winery in 1983. The property was the culmination of a six-year quest to find a site worthy of replicating the great wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy in California. Everything about your time at Peter Michael Winery will be special. You’ll be whisked from the airport in a private car with a bottle of Champagne, put up at the winery’s historic Main House and treated to several chef-prepared meals accompanied by Peter Michael wines.
You’ll tour the land with vineyard manager Javier Aviña, who came to Napa from the Mexican state of Michoacan and has tended the vines at Peter Michael since 1991. Javier’s lifetime background in agriculture will serve as the backdrop as you explore the 150 acres of estate vineyards in Knights Valley.
A close-up, intensive view of the wines of Peter Michael will emerge during your private tasting with winemaker Robert Fiore. A relatively new addition to the winery team, he trained as a geologist before acquiring a graduate degree in oenology from U.C. Davis. Robert worked in both Napa and Burgundy before joining Peter Michael Winery. He still remembers his first glimpse of the estate vineyards, which he described as “a dream come true.”
Long after your trip concludes, you’ll be able to relive your experience with a collection of rare, limited-release Peter Michael Cabernet Franc in varying formats with only six barrels produced in the inaugural 2018 vintage. And of course, the memories will come flooding back every time you glance at your wrist and note the time.
Time waits for no one: bid high on this one-of-a-kind lot!
