Only a few miles from the Napa Valley as the crow flies, Cornell Vineyards features a breathtaking 20 acres that produce gorgeous mountain Cabernets. A hidden gem on the Sonoma side of Spring Mountain, Cornell has released four highly acclaimed vintages in its 20-year history.
Not only do the winning couples receive a wonderful library of each vintage, but they will enter the elevated world of Cornell Vineyards during their three-night stay at the newly updated and well-appointed Summit House. Situated above the clouds with gorgeous views of the vineyard, the lovely home features outdoor dining, fireplace, sauna and a large gourmet kitchen.
The story of Cornell Vineyards began two decades ago when Henry Cornell (formerly of Goldman Sachs) discovered an idyllic parcel on a former stagecoach route where early settlers apparently tended to vines back in the late 1800s. With respect for the land foremost in his mind, Henry purchased the rugged, untamed property and returned the rolling hillsides to vineyards.
For twenty years, Henry and his wife, Vanessa, have accepted the challenges of doing right by the land and invested in a sustainable infrastructure that gives back more than it borrows. Fueled by a desire to leave a legacy to their five children, the Cornells patiently waited until their ninth harvest to produce their first commercial vintage of Cornell Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon in 2013.
The overall Cornell property comprises 240 wild acres that contain 20 acres of obsessively farmed vineyard blocks, each bearing a different combination of variety, clone and rootstock. For optimal blending potential, all five classic red Bordeaux varieties are present in the vineyard.
The diversity of soils, exposures and row orientations, and the winemaking skills of Françoise Peschon (formerly of Araujo Estate in Napa Valley) and Elizabeth Tangney produce this layered, beautifully textured and elegant Cab, with dark mountain-grown fruit braced by structured tannins and enlivened by fresh acidity.
With just four vintages released, Cornell Vineyards has found a seat in an elite group of vintners producing world-class Cabernet Sauvignon from Sonoma County. Under the guidance of Françoise and Elizabeth, the classically structured wines are receiving well-deserved recognition among consumers, trade and press.
During their tour, the two couples will see for themselves as they enjoy a private vertical tasting at the Vineyard House and dinner with the Cornell team, hosted by Françoise and Elizabeth.
