Almost any transplant from the Northeast will tell you that the change of seasons is one of the things they miss the most. The winning bidder on this lot will experience the fall season in both the peaceful tranquility of upper Vermont and the majesty of New York State’s Adirondack Mountains, accompanied by world-class cuisine and accommodation.
Your journey begins when you climb aboard a mid-range Citation Excel private jet for the flight to Barnard, Vermont. Despite a population of less than 1,000, Barnard has been home to notables such as the husband-and-wife team of Nobel Prize-winning novelist Sinclair Lewis and journalist Dorothy Thompson.
The estate of Sinclair Lewis and Dorothy Thompson forms the backdrop for Twin Farms, an unparalleled Forbes Five-star, Relais & Châteaux property. Over 300 acres of woods, meadows and mountains include a private, nine-acre pond, plus miles of trails for hiking, biking and cross-country skiing in season.
The original 1795 farmhouse is the heart of the property, surrounded by individual cottages fashioned by Jed Johnson, one of the world’s leading interior designers. Each cottage has a distinct personality and features works by contemporary masters such as David Hockney and Jasper Johns. While no two are alike, each one exudes a feeling of refined domesticity and calls upon you to feel at home.
The outdoor activities available to you at Twin Farms are almost endless. Go canoeing, kayaking or paddle boarding across Copper Pond. Explore the network of multi-use trails on a mountain bike. Get an exciting workout with tennis, pickleball or axe throwing. Don a Cabela’s vest and use the collection of Orvis rods, reels and flies to fish 12–14-inch rainbows out of the pond. Go horseback riding or play a round of golf. Poke your head into the vegetable garden or explore the working apiary.
The highlight of your culinary experience during your Barnard visit will be the time spent with Rogan Lechthaler, 2022 Naples Winter Wine Festival celebrity chef and owner of The Downtown Grocery in Ludlow.
You’ll have dinner at The Downtown Grocery and sample Rogan’s market-based, seasonally changing menu, paired with wines selected by his wife, Abby. You’ll dine with the Lechthalers at Old Tavern Farm and spend an afternoon enjoying a picnic lunch personally packed for you by the chef.
When you’re not hanging out with Rogan and Abby, you’ll be sampling the remarkably fresh, farm-sourced cuisine at Twin Farms. Chef Nathan Rich and his team prepare seasonal menus from local ingredients, paired with wines from the 15,000-bottle cellar selected by lead sommelier Morgan LaCroix.
It’s time to leave Vermont and head for the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, to another Forbes Five-star, Relais & Châteaux property that is both legendary and unique: The Point at Saranac Lake, “where wilderness meets luxury.”
Built by William Avery Rockefeller over a century ago as a family home and woodland retreat, The Point recalls the heyday of the Adirondack Great Camps. The 75-acre property is a singular resort filled with priceless art and fine antiques, where guests gather as the high society of the Gilded Ages once did. The magnificent guest rooms are housed in four log buildings on the peaceful wooded shore of Upper Saranac Lake. Each has its own unique decor and boasts a broad lake view, a luxurious hand-crafted bed, a stone wood-burning fireplace, a sumptuous private bath and outdoor sitting areas.
Few places are more special or beautiful in the autumn than the Adirondacks, with incredible fall foliage colors reflecting on the shimmering lake. Spend your days hiking or boating, then relax around a bonfire with a hot toddy or bottle of Champagne.
The Point’s executive chef Loic Leperlier combines classic French cuisine and techniques infused with Indian, African and Chinese influences. A native of Réunion, a French island off the coast of Madagascar, Leperlier’s broad experience includes stints at Three Star Michelin restaurants and Relais & Châteaux properties around the world.
At The Point, your culinary day begins with breakfast in the Great Hall or a table overlooking the lake. At lunchtime, enjoy a three-course meal paired with wine. In the evening, gather for cocktails at 7 p.m. before dining in the Great Hall at round tables set with fine linens, china, glassware and fresh flowers. Wednesdays and Saturdays are black tie evenings highlighted by a seven-course meal accompanied by selected fine wines.
Service at The Point is intuitive and seamless, with amenities personally customized for each guest. During your stay, you will travel back in time and truly feel that you are experiencing life during the Gilded Age.
As the leaves turn, your time at Twin Farms and The Point will be one you will never forget: you’re just one bid away from the autumn of a lifetime!
