In a perfect world, all children would be happy, healthy and carefree. But our world is imperfect, and many children – including those here in Collier County – face mental health issues far greater than they can handle, issues that can continue to shape their lives for years to come.

That’s what the Naples Children & Education Foundation will address through this year’s Fund a Need initiative, “Beautiful Minds.” Your gift can make a profound difference in these children’s lives by helping to ensure they will receive the mental health attention they need – and deserve.

The numbers surrounding children’s mental health are likely to surprise you:

  • One in 10 young people will struggle with a mental health issue before the age of 10, regardless of their race or income. At least half of these children will not receive help
  • 50 percent of all lifetime cases of mental illness begin by age 14
  • Two to three children in every American classroom suffer from some type of social/emotional condition; again, the vast majority never receive professional care

For these reasons, early identification, expert diagnosis and effective individual treatment of childhood psychiatric and learning disorders are needed – along with taking away the stigma for children and their families, and empowering them with help, hope and answers. Diagnosing and treating problems early can make the biggest difference for children and for their families and communities.

The “Beautiful Minds” initiative aims to fundamentally transform and expand mental health care for at-risk children in Collier County through an innovative and ground-breaking coalition of health-care providers, community mental health professionals, social services and the public-school system.

Mental health is one of NCEF’s seven strategic, multi-partner initiatives, which address children’s overall health needs from head to toe. Under NCEF’s leadership, David Lawrence Center, Florida State University College of Medicine, Golisano Children’s Hospital, Healthcare Network of Southwest Florida and National Alliance on Mental Illness have collaborated to reduce and eliminate duplication of services, maximize resources, and increase the availability of high quality, best-practice approaches. This innovative and ground-breaking coalition has created Collier County’s first integrated care system, an organized coordination of primary and behavioral healthcare.

This year’s Fund a Need will support “Beautiful Minds,” giving children a chance for a brighter, more joyful future. Here’s how your donation makes difference:

$100,000

  • Provides a bilingual psychologist to provide ongoing mental health services in-school and in healthcare clinics

$50,000

  • Funds a school liaison staff member to help children with mental health needs cope in a school setting

$25,000

How it works:

Your registration packet includes five cards that display your paddle number. Four of the cards display a specific dollar amount on one side and a signature line on the reverse side. The fifth card displays a write-in area for you to choose the amount with a signature line on the reverse side.

Following the auctioneer’s call to action, every paddle holder has the opportunity to drop one (or more) of the signed cards in to the bucket provided by volunteers as they move from table to table through the tent. Every dollar raised will go to support NCEF’s Beautiful Minds, a Children’s Mental Health Initiative to create a path for children to be happy and successful in life.

Bring joy to their worlds and encourage your friends and tablemates to sign the cards with joy! Your participation will be one of the best investments you can make for the benefit of the children in our community. Make it a joyful world … it’s all for the kids!
