Argentina is one of the most exciting and diverse countries on earth, and you’ll have the opportunity to experience every aspect of its art, theater, dance, wine and culinary excellence!
Your adventure begins in the capital of Buenos Aires, a cosmopolitan city frequently referred to as the Paris of South America. You’ll be immersed in the romantic lifestyle of the country with a visit to Rojo Tango at the Faena Hotel. In an intimate atmosphere, you’ll have a close-up view of the dancers as they weave a web of “love, passion, madness and glamour.” Continue your cultural experience with a tour of the neighborhood where the dance began, La Boca, followed by a visit to the Benito Quinquela Martín Museum, home to the area’s most famous artist, whose vivid and colorful canvases shaped the neighborhood as we know it today.
Now, move on to the very best of the capital’s vibrant culinary scene. You don’t have to be off kilter to savor the dishes at Mishiguene (which means “crazy” in Yiddish), but chef Tomás Kalika honors Argentina’s Jewish immigrant heritage by reinventing the classics of Israeli and Middle Eastern cooking. You’ll explore the glories of Italy at Cucina Paradiso with chef Donato De Santis, the “king of Argentine-Italian cuisine.” Meat lovers will delight in Parilla Don Julio, Pablo Rivera’s grill and steakhouse named “Argentina’s Best Restaurant” in 2018 by The World’s 50 Best Restaurants.
You’ll wrap up your exploration of Argentinian art in Buenos Aires with a performance at the legendary Teatro Colón, considered one of the ten best opera houses in the world by National Geographic. In addition to serving as the home base for the Buenos Aires Philharmonic Orchestra, the Teatro Colón hosts a wide array of performances of opera and ballet.
It’s time to leave the capital for the Mendoza region, the heart of Argentina’s wine culture and the home of Bodega Catena Zapata. Nicola Catena emigrated to Argentina from Italy in 1898 and planted his first Malbec vineyard four years later. His grandson, Nicolás Catena Zapata, pioneered the use of European viticultural techniques and revolutionized the Argentine wine industry. Leadership has now passed to the fourth generation: Dr. Laura Catena, a street physician volunteer with the Department of Public Health, who has been called “the face of Argentine wine” for her active role in promoting the Mendoza wine region and Argentine Malbec.
In Mendoza city, you’ll stay at the Five-star Diplomatic Hotel. Each member of your party will unwind with the ultimate red wine experience, a Malbec bath followed by a massage and tea service. Your party of four will be treated to a special dinner paired with Catena wines at Azafrán Restaurant, where chef Pablo Ranea is reinventing the classics of Argentine cuisine.
A private car service will now take your party from Mendoza City to Eastern Mendoza for a close-up look at viticulture, cuisine and lifestyle. Your wine country headquarters for two nights will be La Vendimia, the Catena family weekend retreat, where you’ll enjoy wine and light appetizers by the family pool. You’ll tour the countryside in a horse-drawn carriage and have a private cooking class to learn how to create empanada, the classic Argentine meat-filled turnover. At lunchtime, you’ll be treated to a traditional asado with an array of carefully oven-roasted meats.
Get ready for a glorious day at Bodega Catena Zapata, with its dramatic winery structure based on the pyramid-style design of Mayan architecture. You’ll have a private vineyard tour, a special tasting of Catena’s best Malbec wines and a blending session with a Catena winemaker to create your very own limited-edition Catena wine, complete with a personalized private label.
Before leaving the country, you’ll have one last view of the drama and romance of the tango with a show at Bodegas Caro, a partnership between Nicolás Catena and Domaines Barons de Rothschild [Lafite].
You’ll head home, but your Argentine adventure will resonate in memory when you sample your spectacular collection of Catena wines and bottles from your personal cuvée created in collaboration with a Catena winemaker.
