The legendary Coco Chanel was a force of nature who left an indelible mark on the world of fashion: a visionary who challenged the accepted world view, she created an empire in striking and unforgettable apparel, fragrances and jewelry.
The winning bidder on this one-of-a-kind lot will have the opportunity to see the universe through her eyes, through an immersion into the glitter and glamour of the world of Chanel in Paris.
Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, later known as Coco, was born into extreme poverty in 1883 in Central France. Her father, an itinerant laborer, sent his daughters to an orphanage run by a convent, which was where Coco learned to sew. She found work as a seamstress and began designing hats, becoming a licensed milliner in 1910. After operating successful boutiques in Deauville and Biarritz, she opened her famed maison de couture in 1921 at 31, rue Cambon, in one of the most elegant districts of Paris.
She blazed an individual trail through the world of fashion and fragrance, but one of her most distinctive contributions was in the realm of jewelry. In 1932, the Union of Diamond Merchants asked Chanel to help publicize their jewels during the worldwide economic slump, and the High Jewelry Collection was born.
“If I have chosen diamonds,” she said, “it is because they represent the greatest value in the smallest volume.” Her radical 1932 designs created a sensation: the necklace composed of more than 35 baguette-cut and 535 brilliant-cut diamonds; the bracelet with its three-carat, round-cut diamond centerpiece, surrounded by 900 brilliant-cut stones; the diamond and 18K white gold brooch; and the stunning ring, also composed of luminous 18K white gold and diamonds, gleaming like a star.
The winning bidder will have access to the launch of the 2022 High Jewelry Collection, including an invitation to the exclusive black-tie gala dinner and the chance to be among the first to view and purchase this unique collection.
The spirit of Coco Chanel will come alive during your behind-the-scenes tour of the building at 31, rue Cambon, where her legend was created and nurtured. Situated in the heart of the 1st Arrondissement, a short walk from the Place Vendôme and the Ritz Hotel, the ground floor houses the boutique, while the second floor is reserved for private fittings and showings of her collection.
A stairway leads to her private residence, an intimate apartment that has remained unchanged since Chanel was alive. The space is filled with camellia flower-etched Chinese screens, a golden hand sculpture from Giacometti and a plush suede couch that once held Elizabeth Taylor, Pablo Picasso, Igor Stravinsky and Salvador Dalí. The floor plan of the ornate and sophisticated apartment is literally open, as there are no doors—Chanel reputedly had a fear of being alone.
To spur your imagination and create inspiration, you’ll also have access to the Chanel archive. Established in 2006, the Archive features a unique collection of jewelry, couture and designer pieces from the 1960s-2000s. You’ll have the opportunity to go back in time as you shop for vintage Chanel.
During your three-day whirlwind trip to Paris, you’ll have accommodations at a Five-star hotel, be transported around the city by a private car and chauffeur and benefit from unique, custom-designed activities not available to the public.
“Fashion changes,” said Coco, “but style endures.”
This is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the world of fashion and jewelry through the eyes of Coco Chanel: all you need to do is raise your paddle!
