The winning bidders’ party on this lot will receive a behind-the-scenes glimpse into one of Napa’s most desirable boutique wineries, but that’s not all: They’ll travel to Asia for an immersion into South Korean culture and a friendship with the celebrated entrepreneur and wine lover, Hi Sang Lee and his wife Young Hwa Chung.
Nestled at the base of Napa’s Mayacamas Mountains, Dana Estates (a Sanskrit term meaning “the spirit of generosity”) is dedicated to making small lots of distinctive, world-class wines. Dana is the passion project of South Korean businessman Hi Sang Lee, an avid wine enthusiast who founded Nara Cellar, a wine distribution company with headquarters in Seoul. During one of his trips to the Napa Valley, he fell in love with the former Livingston-Moffett property and eventually purchased it in 2005.
Your party will travel by First Class Airfare to Seoul, where you’ll spend four nights in a Five-star, luxury hotel while discovering the city and the timeless culture of the country. Accompanied by a member of the Lee Family, you’ll begin your Korean adventure with a private walking tour of the city.
Your party will be fortunate to experience a meal at Gaon, honored with the ultimate accolade of Three Michelin Stars—one of only two in Korea and 143 in the world. Under the direction of Chef Kim Byoung-jin, authentic Korean ingredients and dishes are presented in a refined, elegant atmosphere, served on handcrafted crockery that combines natural forms and ancestral glazing techniques.
Golf was introduced to Korea in 1897, and today the country is the third largest golf market in the world, behind the U.S. and Japan. You’ll have the opportunity to play the course at the exclusive Wellington Country Club, located one hour southeast of the city. Named number four on Golf Digest’s Korea Top 15, the course is private and normally restricted to members only.
Your relationship with the Lees will deepen during a dinner at their home, personally prepared by Mrs. Lee. One of the country’s most renowned cooks, she spent several decades presiding over Tsuji Culinary Institute, the foremost culinary institute in Japan. The meal will be paired with an extraordinary selection of both New and Old World wines, drawn from Mr. Lee’s personal cellar.
Dinner at the Lee home will be just the beginning of your culinary adventures in Seoul. You’ll have a private cooking class conducted by Jeong Kwan, called “the philosopher chef” by The New York Times. A former Buddhist nun who began by cooking for the Baegyangsa temple on the southern tip of the Korean peninsula, Jeong Kwan became known to the West after her appearance on “Chef’s Table.” She believes that cooking is a form of meditation and uses her time in the kitchen to better understand the connection of everything that exists in nature.
After returning to the United States, you will have the opportunity to experience Dana Estates firsthand. Originally built in 1883, the property became one of Napa’s “ghost wineries” when it closed during Prohibition. It was revived in the 1980s as Livingston-Moffett and was purchased by Hi Sang Lee in 2005. After a complete renovation, the building now blends history, function and visual appeal.
Six of Dana Estates’ 30 acres are planted to grapevines in prestigious single vineyard sites, yielding a tiny production that is primarily sold through a mailing list. Superstar Philippe Melka has been the consulting winemaker since the inaugural vintage. Dana’s sister winery, VASO Cellars, produces wines of similar quality but with less new oak, making them fresher and more approachable when young.
You’ll spend three nights at the winery’s Crystal House with sweeping views of the surrounding mountains, as you explore Dana Estates, including a private tour and a dinner at the winery with paired wines. You’ll also have the chance to play a round at the Jack Nicklaus-designed Mayacama Golf Club, as well as one of the two championship courses at Silverado Resort.
Filled with amazing experiences in wine, food and tourism, this lot provides the opportunity to absorb the international background and culture behind one of Napa’s most sought-after boutique wineries. One bid can make it yours—and provide invaluable support to our neediest children at the same time.
