While visitors to Napa are initially impressed by the Persian-inspired architecture of Darioush Winery, they are swept off their feet by the gracious, old-world hospitality of Shahpar and Darioush Khaledi. In fact, the art of hospitality originated in ancient Persia, when posthouses were located along caravan routes for weary travelers—accommodations that Marco Polo described as fit for a king.

Darioush Khaledi’s romance with wine dates back to his childhood, when he was fascinated by his father’s winemaking efforts and by the history of winemaking in the Persian city of Shiraz. His sense of hospitality is embedded in his DNA, in a culture that firmly believes a host is responsible for a guest’s happiness while that person is under his roof.

The winning bidder on this lot will get to experience the best of California, compressed into four magical nights. From the rustic elegance of the Napa Valley to the cosmopolitan environment of Los Angeles, you’ll sample the high points of the Golden State.

Your journey begins in Calistoga at the brand-new Four Seasons luxury resort and residences, an 85-room jewel set in the midst of a vineyard at the base of Mount St. Helena. Founded as a hot-springs resort in the 1860s, Calistoga remains a small town with a strong individual character. In your free time, stroll the charming downtown streets and explore the array of independent shops and cafes. The city allows visitors to see wine country as it used to be: only two-lane roads lead into town and fast food franchises are banned by law.

The developers of the Four Seasons spent five years picking a site and another decade completing the project, which stands out as one of the most distinctive boutique properties in the Four Seasons chain. Your spacious one-bedroom suite comes with a fireplace in the living area and a furnished terrace or balcony.

When establishing their winery, the Khaledis purposely chose the cooler sites in southern Napa, high atop Mount Veeder and the valley floor. The estate spans three American Viticultural Areas (Napa Valley, Oak Knoll and Mount Veeder); in planting the vineyards, the Darioush team committed to a Bordeaux style of winemaking, in which different varieties are blended together to form a whole greater than the sum of its parts.

Your tasting at the winery, as well as your intimate wine-paired dinner at the Khaledi residence, will acquaint you with the estate’s remarkable range, including Darioush’s Signature lineup of Viognier, Shiraz, Cabernet Franc and multiple vintages of Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the estate’s crown jewel, Darius II—all sourced from Darioush’s southern Napa Valley estate vineyards on the valley floor, Oak Knoll and high-atop Mount Veeder.

The culinary high point of your time in Napa will be a visit to The French Laundry in Yountville, holder of the ultimate accolade of Three Michelin Stars. When chef Thomas Keller visited Yountville in the early 1990s, seeking a site to establish his destination for French cuisine in Napa, he came across a two-story cottage built in 1900 by a Scottish stonemason. Today, The French Laundry is universally acclaimed as one of the world’s great restaurants: a Relais & Châteaux property, winner of a James Beard Award for “Outstanding Restaurant” and recipient of Wine Spectator’s “Grand Award.”

It’s time to leave Napa and travel by private jet to Los Angeles, where you’ll reside in a suite at the Five-star Hotel Bel-Air in Beverly Hills. Opened in 1946 and nestled in a 12-acre landscaped woodland garden, the Mission-style hotel has served celebrities and politicians who appreciate the property’s seclusion and luxurious charm. More than 4,000 plants and 483 specimen trees dot the grounds, “just a mile away from Beverly Hills but also a million miles away from Beverly Hills.”

You’ll be treated to a concert accompanied by Shahpar and Darioush Khaledi at the Hollywood Bowl, named by Rolling Stone as one of the 10 best live music venues in America, including a multi-course dinner with wine. Opened in 1922, the Bowl has played host to performers ranging from Billie Holiday to The Beatles to Yo-Yo Ma. The concrete amphitheater is carved into the surrounding hillside, providing a dramatic setting and remarkable acoustics.

Before you leave Los Angeles, you’ll dine at Wolfgang Puck at Hotel Bel-Air in Beverly Hills, the flagship restaurant of one of the world’s best-known chefs. Puck moved to L.A. to become chef and partner at the legendary Ma Maison before opening the first Spago on the Sunset Strip in 1982; he now operates more than 20 fine dining restaurants in locations around the world. He was a pioneer of California Cuisine, a style of fusion cooking driven by local and sustainable ingredients.

As a keepsake of this whirlwind tour of California’s high points, take home a six-bottle Magnum vertical of Darius II, a wine of precision, power and grace and the crown jewel of the Darioush estate. When you sip these outstanding wines in the years to come, their flavors will bring back memories of Calistoga, the Darioush estate and the glamour of Los Angeles.

When you bid on this outstanding lot, remember the advice Robert Mondavi gave to Darioush Khaledi when Khaledi wanted to establish his own winery:

“Follow your dream!”
