Are you ready for an extraordinary journey that will take you to the southern tip of South America, encompassing one of the most stunning landscapes on earth, some great Chilean wine estates and the passion and vision of a family legacy?
If so, join Viñedos Familia Chadwick, the holding company for Seña, Viñedo Chadwick and Viña Errázuriz, for an exploration of their world-class wines and a visit to the wild and untamed region of Patagonia. If Everest is the roof of the world, Patagonia is definitely the base: an unspoiled region, that few visitors ever forget. This is the perfect auction lot for those who are both wine and outdoor enthusiasts.
Your journey begins in Valparaíso, a major seaport, naval base and educational center on the Pacific Coast. You’ll spend two nights at the Sheraton Miramar Hotel, rising above the sea at Caleta Abarca beach, featuring unique ocean views and modern elegance. During your tour of Valparaíso, nicknamed the “Jewel of the Pacific” and designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll witness the unique urban architecture based on a series of steeply inclined funicular carriages.
You’ll have a private tour, tasting and lunch at Seña, Chile’s first icon wine and the result of a special partnership between Eduardo Chadwick and Robert Mondavi. Chadwick had joined his father in the family wine business, Vina Errázuriz, in 1983. Eight years later, he spent a week showing Mondavi around the wine regions of central Chile. The two men forged a connection that blossomed into a joint venture, convinced they could make a wine that would showcase Chile’s world-class potential.
Seña is a Bordeaux-style red blend primarily composed of Cabernet Sauvignon and Carménère, with small amounts of Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc added for balance and richness. The wine achieved international recognition in 2015, when critic James Suckling awarded it a perfect 100-point score. Throughout its history it has consistently received the highest scores for a Chilean Bordeaux blend.
In 2009, Viña Errázuriz began building a new winery devoted exclusively to its high-end range of wines. The winery was named for Errázuriz Don Maximiano, who founded Viña Errázuriz in 1870 and planted the first French grape varieties in the Aconcagua Valley.
During your visit to Don Maximiano Estate and Winery, you’ll have a private tour and the opportunity to taste the Don Maximiano Private Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon, the La Cumbre Syrah and the Kai Carménère, the finest expression of Chile’s once-forgotten signature grape. The visit will conclude with a traditional Patagonian barbecue, an all-day affair focused on lamb but also including king crab from Southern Chile.
While in Valparaíso you’ll have lunch at Café Turri, with unforgettable views over the harbor and ocean—order a pisco sour, and don’t miss the baked clams and octopus carpaccio. You’ll also dine at the restaurant of the Hotel Fauna, known for regional dishes such as ceviche, cordillera (sautéed mushrooms with pears, prosciutto, parmesan cheese and fresh arugula in olive oil) and cazoleta mar y tierra (shrimp, cherry tomato and mushrooms prepared in olive oil, garlic, white wine and smoked Chilean peppers).
From Valparaíso you’ll travel inland to Santiago, Chile’s capital and largest city, where you’ll spend the night at The Ritz-Carlton, offering an elevated hotel experience in the city’s El Golf neighborhood.
The focal point of your excursion to Santiago is your visit to Viñedo Chadwick, the crown jewel of Viñedos Familia Chadwick, located in the Maipo Valley at the foot of the Andes Mountains. Conceived by Eduardo Chadwick in 1992 – with the first vintage made in 1999 – the wine came from Eduardo’s desire to honor his father, the late Don Alfonso Chadwick Errázuriz.
Don Alfonso was both a championship polo player and a visionary who established Chile’s first wine brokerage. In 1983, he took control of Viña Errázuriz and asked his son to work with him to restore the winery to its former prestige. Today, Viñedo Chadwick is regarded as one of the finest producers of Cabernet Sauvignon in the world, making history at the “Berlin Tasting” where tasted blind, it was placed first atop of the best wines of the world. Later, it became the first Chilean wine to obtain a perfect score from wine critic James Suckling, in addition to receiving Robert Parker, Jr.’s highest-rated Cabernet scores from Chile for five consecutive years. During your tour, tasting and lunch at Viñedo Chadwick, you’ll have the chance to sample multiple vintages of this remarkable wine.
As amazing as the trip has been up to this point, it has only been a prelude to your exploration of Patagonia. You’ll fly from Santiago to Puerto Natales, gateway to the Torres del Paine National Park near the southern tip of South America.
Your home base in Patagonia will be Awasi, a Relais & Châteaux lodge consisting of 12 villas with views of the surrounding forests, the pampas and Lake Sarmiento. Inspired by old Patagonian shelters and ranching outposts, the accommodations offer the utmost in privacy and comfort. Complete with hots tubs, wood-burning stoves, a private guide and 4X4 vehicle for each room, these sanctuaries will welcome you back after a day of exploring.
Victor Vilugron, the head chef at Awasi, has been called “an artist in the kitchen” and “a wizard” by contented guests. Using the bounty of the surrounding land and produce from the kitchen garden, he crafts constantly changing menus that reflect the best of Chilean cuisine. Born and raised in the southern part of the country, he spent years working in Africa where he learned how to make the most of the ingredients given to him by nature.
Spend your days exploring the breathtaking scenery and untouched beauty of Patagonia: tour Magellan Strait Park, a protected area of 250 acres; visit Magdalena Island, home to over 150,000 specimens of Magellan penguins; explore the mountains and valleys of Tierra del Fuego National Park; take a horseback ride; go kayaking and rafting in the Rio de las Vueltas; and visit the southernmost town of Puerta Almanza.
Your time in Patagonia will live on in your cellar with a priceless collection of large-format bottles of Seña, Viñedo Chadwick, Don Maximiano Founder’s Reserve and the Pinot Noir of Las Pizarras, ranked as one of the top 10 wines in the world by James Suckling.
For years to come, you’ll reflect back on your time in Patagonia and remember the endless vistas, unspoiled landscapes and stunning sunsets: Bid high and make it happen!
