Red’s imagination is tingling at the thought of all the snapshots he can take on this African expedition. Picture the sophistication of Cape Town, the discovery of Constantia’s wine country, the awesome wildlife and haunting savannahs of Botswana—combined throughout with the legendary luxury of Belmond. This is an experience you definitely won’t want to miss!
Your journey begins in Cape Town at the Mount Nelson hotel, one of the city’s finest retreats, offering the perfect combination of leafy tranquility and contemporary buzz. Nestled between the slopes of Table Mountain, this iconic pink lady has been captivating visitors since 1899, including luminaries such as Winston Churchill, Queen Elizabeth II, John Lennon and the Dalai Lama. The winning bidders’ party of four will relax and recharge after their long flight with a full day in a poolside cabana. This private escape will allow you to relish the day in style, soothed by wine, spirits, fruit bowls and access to the heated pool.
You’ll spend a full day exploring the Constantia wine region just south of the city, which has a history dating to 1685. The region benefits from a Mediterranean climate, perfect for growing varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon; the area is also famous for its sweet wines. You’ll dine at one of the city’s most exciting new restaurants, Amura, where Michelin-starred Chef Ángel León celebrates the diversity of the South African ocean with dishes that echo both Spain and Asia. Every afternoon, embrace tradition with afternoon tea served in the hotel lounge, with 60 carefully chosen teas complementing an array of sweet and savory delicacies.
From Cape Town, you’ll travel north to the Republic of Botswana, where your party will stay at Belmond’s Eagle Island Lodge in the Okavango Delta, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You’ll sleep in air-conditioned, tented rooms with ensuite bathrooms, walled outdoor showers, a stocked minibar and a private plunge pool. These luxurious accommodations have a front row seat to floodplains teeming with wildlife, where abundant food attracts herds of elephants, buffalo and antelope. Skilled chefs will prepare unique menus with a Saharan spirit, enjoyed alfresco by an open fire.
During your stay, the drama of the delta will unfold before you. You’ll go on game drives twice each day, observing Africa’s largest elephant population along with lions, cheetahs, leopards, hyenas and rock-climbing klipspringers. Motorized boating and barge cruises will allow you to plunge deeper into the landscape and spot a greater range of wildlife. You’ll glide along on a traditional mokoro dugout canoe as you explore areas not accessible by boat. Over 400 land and aquatic species make for unrivaled bird watching. Back at the lodge, sip a drink at the bar and enjoy a spectacular sunset.
The final stop on your African adventure will be Belmond’s luxury eco-lodge in Chobe National Park, where you’ll observe the world’s largest elephant population in an atmosphere of serene sustainability. The tented, air-conditioned rooms contain a four-poster bed, a spacious, ensuite bathroom and are perched on a raised wooden platform to allow a breathtaking view of wildlife in their natural habitat. As impala glide across the savannah, you’ll enjoy signature African dishes paired with fine wines and Champagne. Head out into the bush and find a collection of paintings by the San Bushman thought to be more than 1,500 years old, then continue on to the amazing baobab grove, a cathedral-like cluster of 13 giant trees that are almost as old as the paintings. One evening, a helicopter will whisk you to a remote location for an exotic pop-up dinner.
There is so much to delight you in this wild, untamed land that you’ll be thinking about the experience for years to come. Red urges you to bid as generously as possible and achieve the trip of a lifetime.
